Lyx 基于 LaTeX(而 LaTeX 基于 TeX)，它的目的是让你不需要接触 LaTeX 繁杂的控制命令也能排出专业的文章、书籍。其操作界面是“所见即所得”的(WYSIWYG)，跟有些办公套件中的字处理软件一样。所以使用还是相当轻松的。
不过 Lyx 的基础环境是要有 TeX 的，Ubuntu 下可以 apt-get 有关 tetex 的包。或者直接 apt-get 按转 lyx 包。如果需要数学公式(一般都要)，还要安装相应的字体(symbol)。
